Judas Priest

Judas Priest wurde 1971 von K. K. Downing und Ian Hill gegründet, Rob Halford (1973) und Glenn Tipton (1974) stießen später hinzu und damit war über Jahre hinweg bis zum Ausstieg von Halford (1992) das Lineup perfekt.

1974 das erste Album "Rocka Rolla", gefolgt vom 1976er Album "Sad Wings Of Destiny", das Priest-Klassiker wie "Victim of Changes" und "The Ripper" drauf hatte. "Sin After Sin" (1977), "Killing Machine" (1977), das in Amerika als "Hell Bent For Leather" (1979 in Europa) erschien, "Stained Class" (1978) und "Unleashed in the East" (1979) machten Judas Priest zu weltweiten Superstars. Meine erste Priest-Scheibe war "British Steel" (1980). Dieses Album machte Judas Priest zum Mitinitiator des "New Wave of British Heavy Metal". "Screaming for Vengeance" (1982) katapultierte die Band in ungeahnte Ruhmeshöhen.

Mit "Turbo" (1986) vollzog Priest einen Stilwechsel und setzte erstmalig Gitarrensynthesizer ein. Fans der ersten Stunde waren enttäuscht und warfen der Band eine kommerzielle Ausrichtung vor, aber Judas Priest gewannen auch viele neue Fans. Wie gesagt, mein Einstieg war "British Steel", ich war seiner Zeit von "Turbo" begeistert - das fetzte und knallte. Noch heute tue ich mir die Scheibe hin und wieder in den CD-Player. Mit ein Vertreter aus dieser Zeit und erfolgreicher als vorgenanntes Album, "Ram It Down" (1988). Ja und dann kam der Überflieger, der Hammer, das Maß aller Alben für die nächste Zeit - "Painkiller" (1990). Judas Priest haben die "Hall Of Fame" des Heavy Metal neu geschrieben. Auch ich habe "Painkiller" und wenn ich ehrlich bin, geht es mir mit dem Album so wie mit Metallicas "St. Anger"; jeder Titel einzeln - super, das Album am Block - naja.

Sänger Rob Halford verließ Judas Priest 1992 um eigene Wege zu gehen. Für Priest begann eine Durststrecke und es gab nicht Wenige, die an einen Fortbestand der Band zweifelten. In dieser Zeit erschien "Metal Works" (1993), das Best-Of-Doppelalbum.

Ripper Owens wurde 1997 neuer Sänger. Mit ihm veröffentlichten Judas Priest die Alben "Jugulator" (1997), "Live Meltdown 98" (1998), "Genocide" (2000), "Demolition" (2001) und "Live in London" (2002). Aus dieser Zeit habe ich nur "Demolition", das mir gut gefällt. Die Fans wollten Ripper Owens nicht so recht annehmen und so räumte dieser 2003 wieder das Feld zur Reunion von Rob Halford und Judas Priest. Produkt der erneuten Zusammenarbeit ist "Angel Of Retribution" (Febr. 2005).

Am 13. Juni 2008 erscheint das Konzeptalbum NOSTRADAMUS.

Ein Wort noch zu dieser Discographie. Die genannten Jahreszahlen sind die originalen Erscheinungsdaten; die Playlisten hingegen, sind die der verlinkten Alben. Durch Companywechsel bzw. neue Plattenverträge veröffentlichen die Plattenfirmen diverse Special Editions mit Bonus-Tracks usw.. Auch fehlt in dieser Listung das Album "Killing Machine", da die Playliste identisch mit "Hell Bent For Leather" ist und selbst Judas Priest in ihrer Discographie auf ihrer Webseite darauf verzichten.
